Meet the Urban Food Project’s newest team members!
Will Upchurch and Raghela Scavuzzo just joined the REV team as our new Urban Food Project produce buyer and farm to corner store coordinator through the AmeriCorp Vista program. And we want you to get to know them!
Will, a native of St. Augustine, Florida, is a recent graduate of Birmingham Southern College. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and was active in the Sigma Chi Fraternity during his years there. As a resident of Birmingham for the past four years, and previous cook at Hart & Soul Cafe and Little Savannah Restaurant & Bar, Will certainly knows his way around the Birmingham local food and produce scene. He is excited to help promote and improve the local food movement through his work with the Urban Food Project.
As the new Urban Food Project produce buyer, his main job is to help expand the UFP Alabama-grown produce distribution system. What does that mean? It means connecting to local farmers. It also means connecting to local restaurants, corner stores and retailers. But most importantly, it means putting these two groups together to create a healthy, mutually beneficial relationship between local farmers and food businesses in Birmingham.
Raghela comes to us following her Masters in Public Health studies at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. She has extensive experience in a number of jobs related to health, safety and nutrition including being a nutrition consultant and home health assistant. In addition, she has engaged in community food distributions through her experience as a soup kitchen volunteer, organizing food drives and working with the Second Harvest Food Bank.
As the new Urban Food Project farm to corner store coordinator, Raghela will once again be advocating healthy lifestyles, only this time in the Magic City. She will be working closely with corner store owners to facilitate the sale of fresh, local produce to Birmingham residents. Her goal is to make it easy and affordable for every Birmingham resident to get their daily dose of fresh and delicious fruits and veggies!
