Did you know that it’s AmeriCorps/VISTA week? Well it is!
So much of REV’s neighborhood revitalization work wouldn’t be possible without aid from our AmeriCorps and VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) team. So we figured we’d return the favor by saluting their achievements this year.
First up? Meet Khadijah Aleem – REV’s AmeriCorps Revitalization Coordinator
Khadijah joined the REV Birmingham team in September 2014 by way of the YWCA of Central Alabama’s AmeriCorps Program. And it’s because she saw a need in her city. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the AmeriCorps Program; it’s a national service initiative — akin to the Peace Corps — for persons desiring to commit to at least one year of service nationally
As REV’s revitalization coordinator, Khadijah spends much of her time addressing revitalization needs in the Ensley and Woodlawn neighborhoods. She’s made tremendous impact through her service and goes above and beyond the call of duty in every action. Some of her highlight achievements this year include awesome supervision of Woodlawn’s social media pages and the management of key projects like the REV Street Team Launch Party and more.
With a background in business and a degree biology from UAB, Khadijah plans to pursue a master’s degree in international health and eventually attend medical school. But she’s confident the knowledge she’s gained through her AmeriCorps service at REV will transfer well into her future endeavors.
Khadijah is dedicated to committing a full year of service to the YWCA service site, which equates to roughly 1720 hours of service to the community. We can’t thank her enough for the diligence she has exerted at the REV office. Because it certainly shows!
Look out for profiles on our remaining VISTAs in the upcoming weeks!
