Food entrepreneurship leads economic development progress in Woodlawn

The Birmingham community of Woodlawn has recently seen economic growth through the renovation of an existing but dilapidated building that now houses a restaurant, a bakery and a fresh produce distribution center. Located at 5829 1st Avenue North, the joint venture between Woodlawn Foundation and REV Birmingham has allowed two Woodlawn business owners to expand their footprint to accommodate a growing demand for their respective products.

As the Birmingham food scene grows, Beehive Baking Company owners Sarah Schlund and Caeden Oliver are using Woodlawn Street Market to reach new customers. The co-owners first participated in the market last fall, and both say they’ve learned a lot through the process.

UAB honors students visit Woodlawn for lesson in community development

Students in the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Global and Community Leadership Honors program visited Woodlawn this week to learn about community and economic development. REV Birmingham was glad to welcome the incomparable professor Anthony Hood and his class as we talked about inclusive revitalization in Woodlawn and other urban commercial districts.
