Have you ever driven past Woodrow Hall on 1st avenue and wondered what it was? Woodrow Hall is an all-inclusive historic banquet hall/wedding venue located in the heart of Woodlawn. Built in 1914, Woodrow has changed ownership multiple times and has been everything from a doctor’s office to a hair salon. Now, the event space has been restored to its historic beauty, where it has hosted weddings, baby showers, quinceañeras, and even masquerade balls!
But who makes it all happen?
Meet the Holmes family, who run the three-story event space. And by run, we mean it! Princess Holmes began her event services at home. She dabbled in cake making and, little by little, began introducing floral arrangements to full-on event decorating to her business.
As her event services grew, so did the need for a bigger space. As she was looking for a location, Woodlawn seemed to have the answers.
“Woodlawn chose me,” said Princess.
Princess took a leap of faith and chose Woodrow Hall as her next business venture when she purchased it in 2019. Due to Princess’ upbringing in Crestwood, she was familiar with the area and community. She instantly fell in love with Woodrow Hall and had a vision that would restore the historic building to its former glory.
Before she could even host events, there was a lot of work and renovations to do. The Holmes took the project head-on and began restoring the space to its historic beginnings. They tore up the green vinyl tiles and refurbished the wood floors underneath. Her family spent hours on their hands and knees to make it what it is today. Princess had a vision and made it come to life.
Now you can reserve the venue for events accommodating up to 400 guests. The exposed brick, natural lighting, and high-end surround sound systems make Woodrow Hall the perfect location for your next big event.
Princess and her family have impacted Woodlawn by hosting different community events like the Woodlawn High School prom, business luncheons, and senior breakfasts. With the help of the Woodlawn Business Association, Woodrow Hall has now hosted hundreds of events and is a successful puzzle piece of the community.

REV Birmingham is a long-time advocate for making the switch to two-way streets downtown, and this is something recommended by planners studying our downtown for years. In fact, the team that developed the 2004 City Center Master Plan recommended many street changes but noted 4th Avenue North conversion should take place “immediately.” We believe this project is a catalytic moment for Birmingham – but you may find yourself wondering why that is.

The Key Tool for Urban Revitalization: Downtown BHM's Business Improvement District

By the time REV took on BID management in 2018, downtown had a new set of needs from its BID. Downtown Birmingham in the ‘90s had a population mainly of 9 to 5 employees. But the downtown of 2018 had a whole new population of residents and visitors throughout the day and night. We had new opportunities to create positive experiences, inviting them into more downtown businesses and public spaces, and to keep them coming back for more.

On the corner of 3rd Avenue and 16th Street North, you’ll find Nextec, a redevelopment of the 90-year-old, 65,000-square-foot Edwards Motor Company building (also formerly known as the Sticks ‘N’ Stuff building). With experience in historic renovation, developer Michael Mouron, chairman of Capstone Real Estate Investments, began this civic project in 2021 as a space for business startups to continue their work in the Magic City – a function encouraged by REV Birmingham.
