Kaitlyn Bentley’s True40 Fitness Studio is the first tenant to open in downtown Birmingham’s newly redeveloped The Battery. SRS Real Estate Partners led the renovation of the former Birmingham Electric Battery Company (BEBCO) facility at 2201 2nd Avenue South, where additional tenants Birmingham District Brewing Co. and Gus’s Fried Chicken are expected to open later this fall.
True40 Fitness Studio Downtown Birmingham classes begin on Monday, August 6, and will offer 30 classes Monday through Saturday in addition to childcare for children ages infant through 10 years during select class times. The first week of classes will be free.
“Developments like The Battery, along with a heightened sense of health and wellness across Birmingham, are doing so much for our city,” says Bentley. “We are thrilled to be a part of the momentum throughout downtown, and think the tenants at The Battery will be great additions to Birmingham. We’re also especially excited to offer a convenient, body-changing workout option to residents and employees in the city.”
Bentley, the first franchisee and owner of True40 Fitness Studio Downtown Birmingham, is a lifelong fitness enthusiast with a love for the community that fitness studios create. In 2016, she left corporate America to manage True40 Fitness Studio’s Cahaba Heights location. Bentley has worked with True40 founder Allie Weingarten to open the downtown location and with REV Birmingham to find just the right space for her business.
“REV’s knowledge of and relationships within Birmingham were a major asset to me during the process of deciding where to sign a lease,” Bentley said. “REV offered so much help throughout the process of opening True40: resources to contact about a loan, media assistance, brainstorming for my grand opening party, and more. The fact that all of this was provided for FREE was absolutely amazing. I trust and appreciate REV so much!”
Ward Neely with SRS Real Estate Partners represented the landlord, Electric Battery Co., in the transaction.
“We are thrilled to have our first tenant opening at The Battery!” Neely said. “True40 embodies everything we were looking for in potential tenants. Their innovative approach to wellness is refreshing and they will be an excellent complement to an exciting lineup. With District Brewing opening right around the corner, this will give you multiple reasons to come to The Battery and stay around for a while.”
Founded by Allie Weingarten, True40 Fitness Studio is an uplifting studio that provides a total-body workout for all ages and fitness levels. High-intensity classes are low-impact, balance the body, strengthen the core and provide various challenging exercises in one 60-minute workout. Movements are designed to lengthen and tone muscles, improve overall posture and balance, and build confidence in True40 clients. Weingarten’s True40 Fitness Studio locations include Auburn, Ala.; Cahaba Heights, Ala.; Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and Atlanta, Ga. (opening October 2018). True40 Fitness Studio in Downtown Birmingham is the fourth location in Alabama and the first franchise.

REV Birmingham is a long-time advocate for making the switch to two-way streets downtown, and this is something recommended by planners studying our downtown for years. In fact, the team that developed the 2004 City Center Master Plan recommended many street changes but noted 4th Avenue North conversion should take place “immediately.” We believe this project is a catalytic moment for Birmingham – but you may find yourself wondering why that is.

By the time REV took on BID management in 2018, downtown had a new set of needs from its BID. Downtown Birmingham in the ‘90s had a population mainly of 9 to 5 employees. But the downtown of 2018 had a whole new population of residents and visitors throughout the day and night. We had new opportunities to create positive experiences, inviting them into more downtown businesses and public spaces, and to keep them coming back for more.

On the corner of 3rd Avenue and 16th Street North, you’ll find Nextec, a redevelopment of the 90-year-old, 65,000-square-foot Edwards Motor Company building (also formerly known as the Sticks ‘N’ Stuff building). With experience in historic renovation, developer Michael Mouron, chairman of Capstone Real Estate Investments, began this civic project in 2021 as a space for business startups to continue their work in the Magic City – a function encouraged by REV Birmingham.
