Parkside District Development
The City of Birmingham and REV are pleased to announce a vision and action plan for the Parkside District. The program was developed in coordination with UAB, Children’s Hospital and Alabama Power, and the result of a yearlong effort to position Parkside as the hub of a pedestrian friendly downtown.
With new branding, signage, and a pedestrian-centered right of way plan, Birmingham hopes to encourage city-goers to explore the Parkside District—and beyond—on foot. The efforts in place will unify neighborhoods, encourage healthy living, and continue to place Birmingham on par with the best cities in the world where walking is integral to the city experience.
“We are excited to unveil this vision and brand for Parkside as part of our overall plan to unify the Birmingham experience,” said the Mayor. “It complements similar strategies coming into focus on the west and east sides of the City and already underway in the Civil Rights and Entertainment districts.
Like our partners in the Parkside district, we have committed partners in General Krulak with Birmingham Southern, Limbaugh Toyota and the Crossplex in the Western area and we are using the same model throughout the city.”
The Parkside District sits at the heart of downtown Birmingham, along the very railway that separates the city’s Northside and Southside neighborhoods. It spans more than 30 blocks bounded to the west by I65, the east by 20th Street, the north by the railroad tracks and the south by 4th Avenue South, and is already home to numerous crowd-drawing, award-winning ventures: Railroad Park, Regions Field, Good People Brewery, and the viaduct LightRails Installation by renowned artist Bill Fitzgibbons.
As new apartments and businesses populate Parkside, the city expects increased visitors to the area. And with planning for additional residential, shopping and dining destinations underway, the district will become a destination for locals and tourists
The Parkside vision and action plan will begin to be phased in over the coming year and as the district builds out. By incorporating regular walking into the strategy for growth, community partners will launch initiatives to guide private sector development, install public improvements and place making elements, implement strategic marketing efforts and plan for parking and safety.
